What to wear to your engagement shoot!
Styling
What you wear plays a big role in the overall feel and style of your photos. A little planning goes a long way, so take the time to think about your outfits. Browsing Instagram or Pinterest can be a great way to gather inspiration for your engagement shoot.
Fabrics & Textures
Certain fabrics simply photograph better than others, and they also have a timeless quality so your images never look dated. Fabrics like linen, silk, denim, cotton, knits, tulle, and ribbed textures not only add depth to your photos but also bring movement and elegance that translates beautifully on camera.
Colours & Tones
Using a colour palette is the easiest way to plan your outfits. It takes the stress out of choosing and ensures everything looks cohesive on camera.
Neutral tones and earthy colours — think beige, cream, olive, rust, soft browns, and greys — always photograph beautifully and have a timeless, natural feel. But don’t be afraid to add muted pastels or richer tones like deep burgundy, mustard, or navy.
Here are some of my favourite palettes to inspire you:
General Guidelines
Stripes don’t work well in photos.
If you’d like to include patterns, keep it simple — only one of you should wear a bold or strong pattern so the focus stays on you both, not the clothes.”
Please avoid text, logos, or branding on clothing.
Top Tips 💡
Start with one key outfit, then build the other looks around it.
Accessories can transform your look — a hat, scarf, jacket, or statement piece can add dimension and style without needing a full outfit change.
Please iron your clothes before the shoot.
Think about your surroundings — e.g., if your shoot is in a lush green field, choose complementary colours that pop against green.
Less is usually more — clean, simple looks often photograph the best.
Don’t forget your hands will be in photos (especially for ring shots!) — tidy nails or coordinated nail colours make a big difference.
