Why the timing of your ceremony matters|Golden hour magic
What time of day your ceremony takes place plays a significant role in not only how your photos turn out, but also how comfortable your guests are on a hot day.
If you’re dreaming of golden-hued, dewy portraits with that soft, romantic glow, that’s all thanks to golden hour – and with a little planning, it can happen at your wedding too.
💡 What is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is that magical window of time just before sunset (and just after sunrise) when the light is soft, warm, and flattering.
🕑 Why Does Ceremony Timing Matter?
Your ceremony time directly impacts when we can take portraits.
If your ceremony runs too late, we might lose the light before we even get a chance to shoot outside. Too early, and your portraits might fall in the harsh midday sun – which can mean squinting, shadows, and sweatiness.
By thinking about golden hour when you set your ceremony time, you give us the best chance to create those stunning, glowy photos.
✨ How to Plan Around Golden Hour
1. Check your sunset time
The easiest place to start is simply Googling “sunset + your wedding date/location.” This gives you an accurate reference point to build the rest of your timeline around.
2. Work backwards from sunset
Ideally, couple portraits happen 30–60 minutes before sunset. This is when the light is at its softest and most romantic. If you're getting married in a valley, near hills, or in an area with tall trees, remember that the sun will disappear earlier — so we may need to shift portraits forward to make the most of the light.
3. Consider ceremony length and travel time
If your ceremony runs for around 30 minutes, make sure to allow extra time for hugs, congratulations, group photos, and any movement between locations. These moments are important and shouldn’t be rushed — but they also impact how much golden hour we have to play with.
4. Chat with your photographer
A good photographer will help guide your timeline so your day feels relaxed while still giving you space for stunning golden hour portraits. I work closely with all my couples to ensure we strike the perfect balance between dream photos and an effortless, enjoyable flow to your day.
🌧 But What If It’s Cloudy (or Rains)?
No worries! Soft, overcast light is actually a photographer’s best friend—it’s beautifully even and flattering. And if it rains? I’ll bring clear umbrellas, creative ideas, and a backup plan so the magic still happens.
💍 Why You’ll Thank Yourself Later
Golden hour portraits aren’t just beautiful images – they’re often one of the calmest, sweetest moments of your wedding day. It’s your chance to step away from the crowd, soak in the last light of the day together, and have a quiet moment before the evening boogie begins.
