A Surprise Proposal at Hobbiton| Josh & Rachael’s Engagement Story

When Josh first got in touch with me from Australia, he had one very important question: Could I secretly photograph his proposal at Hobbiton?

Of course, my answer was an enthusiastic yes!

Josh had always imagined proposing in front of the iconic red door at the top of the Shire. I wasn't quite sure if he'd make it all the way there, though—most people are so full of excitement and nerves that they end up proposing much earlier than they planned!

But Josh stayed true to his plan.

When we reached the top of the Shire, he got down on one knee in front of the red door and asked the biggest question of his life. She was completely surprised.

In fact, earlier in the tour she had even asked me to take a photo of the two of them on her phone! She simply thought I was a very enthusiastic photographer wandering around Hobbiton. A Hobbiton super fan… that’s common.

One of my favourite parts of the day was seeing the reactions from everyone else on the tour. As we crossed paths later on, they all cheered and congratulated the newly engaged couple. It was such a special atmosphere.

The proposal took place during a regular guided tour. We stayed towards the back of the group, which allowed me to capture the proposal and plenty of portraits afterwards with very few people in the background. You do have to work quickly, but it absolutely can be done.
