How to Plan the Perfect Wedding Day Timeline

Whether you're planning a spring, summer, autumn, or winter wedding in New Zealand, a well-planned timeline can make all the difference.

The best timelines allow enough room for travel, bathroom breaks, getting in and out of vehicles, family wrangling, and those little moments that always take longer than expected. A relaxed timeline means a more enjoyable day, less stress, and better photos.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Do you want getting-ready photos of both partners?

  • Are you having a first look?

  • How long will your ceremony be?

  • What is your group photo list?

  • Do you want sunset photos?

  • What time does the sun set on your wedding date?

  • How far apart are your getting-ready locations, ceremony, and reception?

  • Will your portraits be taken on-site or at a separate location?

Sample Timeline

1:30pm – Final touches, getting dressed, bridal party & mother of bride portraits

2:00pm – Photographer departs for ceremony

2:30pm – Photographer arrives at ceremony to capture guest arrivals, venue details, and groom waiting.

3:00pm – Ceremony

3:30pm – Ceremony concludes, congratulations, hugs, and candid moments

3:50pm – Family & Group Portraits

4:50pm –Guests move to cocktail hour. Bridal party and couple portraits on-site

5:50pm – Freshen up and prepare for reception entrance

6:00pm – Couple and bridal party enter reception, Dinner service begins

7: 15 pm – Sunset portraits (perfect golden light for a spring wedding)

8:00 pm – Sunset time- Return to reception

Summer Weddings

With later sunsets, you can usually have a later ceremony and sunset photos around 8pm.

Winter Weddings

With earlier sunsets, you'll often need an earlier ceremony, sometimes as early as 1:00pm, to allow enough daylight for portraits.

Every wedding is different, but the key is leaving plenty of wiggle room throughout the day.
